Following Lliswerry Ladies impressive silver medal winning performance at the Welsh Road Relays in September (Sandra Chipper, Antoinette Dumayne, Emma Wookey, Nicky Collin) qualification for the National Relays was secured. Due to other racing commitments, a substituted team made the trip to Birmingham for the prestigious ERRA National Road Relays on the 7th October 2017.
We expected the standard to be high, but our ladies were surrounded by some of the UK’s finest female athletes, including quickest lady on the day, recent IAAF World Championship 1500m finalist Jessica Judd! After a short recce of the course, Emma Wookey lined up to lead the team out on the first leg on the 4.33km course around Sutton Park. Despite a ferocious start, with a few runners taking a tumble, Emma got safely away and was soon heading up the finishing straight well inside the top half of the field, to hand over to Tracie Williams-Rowe. Tracie held a fantastic position throughout her leg as the field began to spread out, along the winding treelined route. Tracie handed over to Sarah Lauder, who maintained the position Emma & Tracie had gained before handing onto our anchor runner, Nicky Collin. Nicky had a fantastic run, lifting the team 9 places up the field. Lliswerry Ladies finished a very credible 54th out of the 85 teams competing, in our debut at the event. Well done Ladies!
